Acoustic Scale Model

2017

Functional prototype of a theater wall (theater opened 2017, client confidential). This prototype was commissioned to enable physical testing of the architect’s proposed wall finishing. The model is scaled for geometry and mass in order to provide realistic acoustic properties, and incorporates functional acoustic fiberglass floating above a plywood simulation of the backing wall.

3D Printed Frame Structure

2015

Structural frame model representing a section of an existing structure. This model provided a platform for discussion and collaboration at multi-disciplinary design meetings, typically involving the client alongside representatives of multiple architecture firms, engineering consultants, and contractors.

The workflow that this model enabled makes a clear argument for the collaborative value of VR/AR. Until those technologies mature, FDM printed models like this can provide a valuable platform for ideation.

Side note: Three dimensional frame structures such as this are generally very efficient in terms of material use, which has the effect of making them extremely difficult to print in a traditional layer based FDM 3d printer. Further work by Arup in collaboration with Ai Build addresses this for extrusion style 3D printing by using 6-axis industrial robots, and machine learning to predict deformation of the unsupported print structure.
